UCF Landscaping and Natural Resources is seeking well qualified candidates to apply for the role of Biologist I. Duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Serves as Land Management specialist for UCF Natural Lands Program. Oversees land management activities including prescribed fire planning and implementation, wildland fire response, fire line and trail maintenance, forest mulching, burn unit preparation, operating heavy equipment, and other related activities.

  • Oversees exotic/invasive vegetation management and treatments in UCF natural areas. Assists with vegetation monitoring, post prescribed fire monitoring, and with special projects, such as landscaping, restoration plantings, thinning of the forest, communicating with MOU fire partners, and other related activities as defined by immediate supervisor.

  • Works in conjunction with the urban forestry team in regular maintenance of the campus urban forest. This includes, but is not limited to, tree removal, tree pruning, tree planting, mapping, ground truthing, air spading, and other arboricultural activities. Assists with storm response cleanup and post storm surveying.

  • Maintenance and operation of appropriate equipment used to maintain campus, such as chainsaws, spray equipment, skid units, fire engine, and other fire fighting equipment.

  • Assists with establishing prescribed fire plans, coordinating with local Florida Forestry representatives, and communicating with necessary stakeholders regarding forest management and prescribed fire activities.

  • Engages with the community, such as research/ site use students and educational groups at UCF.This includes facilitating informational tours, communicating with students about our natural areas, and overseeing site use permitting as it relates to the natural areas.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 4+ years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's or Master's degree and 0+ years of relevant experience.


  • Knowledge of land management and urban forestry techniques, including biological monitoring.

  • Ability to attend national, state, or regional conferences and meetings.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of all applicable Federal, State, and local safety rules and regulations, including OSHA, Dept. of Health, and the Bureau of Fire Safety.

  • Previous experience working in extreme environments.

  • Previous experience working on a team with diverse backgrounds.
