Credit and Collections Manager

Central Garden & Pet Company (NASDAQ:CENT and CENTA), is a leading innovator, marketer and producer of quality branded products for the pet, lawn and garden supplies markets. This position will play a significant role for ITC working closely with the ITC Manager and the entire Shared Service Centers’ Leadership team through planning and execution of processes and solutions to support the Credit processing and Collection teams.

This position is accountable for the entire credit granting process, including the consistent application of a credit policy, periodic credit reviews of existing customers , and the assessment of the creditworthiness of potential customers, with the goal of optimizing the mix of company sales and bad debt losses. The role will also be responsible for continual process improvements and cost effective delivery of services. This position will oversee the Collection activity, will build and maintain cross functional relationships throughout the company and ensure compliance with Company policy and procedures and SOX controls. Importantly, this position is responsible for supervising, training, and mentoring a team of Credit and Collection Specialists.

MEASURES OF SUCCESS

  • Manages the investigation of credit risks and establishes guidelines for granting credit to customers
  • Approves new lines of credit and/or the extension of credit limits
  • Manages customer credit files
  • Completes bad debt analysis and shares with business unit finance leaders
  • Participates in AR aging analysis and reporting activity
  • Completes customer analysis and works with Sales team to support trade show activity
  • Oversees periodic credit reviews to ensure credit terms are in line with Customer’s credit worthiness, payment and write-off history with Company and financial condition
  • Negotiates collection arrangements for overdue account balances in coordination with Collection function
  • Handles all levels of accounts from small to more complex and larger accounts
  • Ensures staff works within the guidelines established by the company
  • Supervises and participates in the compilation of credit data
  • Oversees and assists with initial customer setup including reviewing application, bank and credit references, D&B reports, and financial statements
  • Analyzes credit data and financial statements to determine degree of risk
  • Manages relations with credit reporting agencies
  • Maintains relations with Sales department
  • Periodically reviews the Corporate credit policy and recommends updates to CSC Leadership and the CFO, as necessary
  • Visits existing and potential customers to investigate credit and collection matters and to foster good credit relationships between the customer and the organization, as necessary
  • Develops, interprets and ensures the consistent application of organization policies
  • Establishes and controls budgets, deadlines, and timely and accurate implementation of policies and procedures
  • Supervises and develops staff through timely communications and training
  • Authorizes or disapproves extensions of credit and adjustments
  • Maintains customer files and makes sure that necessary documentation is received and filed
  • Builds and maintains customer relationships
  • Establishes goals and objectives for Credit and Collection functions
  • Measures department performance with appropriate metrics
  • Interacts with outside counsel as needed (bonded claim filing, high dollar collection issues, etc)
  • Maintains SOX narratives and assists with internal and external audits

IDEAL CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES

Education Requirement and Years of Experience

  • Minimum BS degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 7 years of commercial credit management experience (some public company experience)
  • Experience developing, monitoring and reporting on KPI’s and SLA’s related to the credit function
  • 7+ years leadership experience in ITC with track record of process improvement and efficient delivery of services.
  • Demonstrated change management skills
  • Demonstrated accomplishments in developing and implementing process improvements and measuring the success of desired outcomes
  • Must have worked with large national or regional company in a Credit and Collection capacity. Demonstrated ability to lead a heavily metric driven organization
  • Experience working with large customer base in credit activities and resolving disputes
  • Strong understanding of internal controls including SOX requirements for ITC

Experience Preferred

  • Consumer Products experience, preferred
  • Experience in shared service environment, preferred
  • Knowledgeable with SAP, preferred
  • Experience with credit scoring model preferred

Other Critical Success Factors:

  • Ability to partner with Shared Service Center (SSC) management and provide input into process improvement as well as effective execution and change management within the team
  • Ability to support Sales organization while maintaining integrity of Central’s credit policies
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, negotiating and analytical skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Mechanical Lien & Payment Bond experience preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of credit-related laws
  • Considerable experience with negotiations
  • Knowledge of leading financial / accounting software functionality and previous ERP experience.  SAP experience a plus
  • Other – candidate should have the highest integrity and character, possess finance knowledge and seasoned business sense, convey a strong presence and be a skilled influencer.  Must be able to manage process, collaborate cross-functionally and assist with resource modeling and management of 3rd parties using effective vendor management.
